Privitizing the telephone

[!quote|#ff6666] Highlight American telephone industry as a decentralized network of local and regional systems, each owned and operated by residents of the territories they served

I disagree with this view of a decentralized network, while I am against the monopoly it is important to have structure to unite the vast country. American citizens should not have to live in little isolation clusters but instead as one big proud community, that would be the people not some sparatic networks here are there.

[!quote|#5fb236] Highlight Hubbard waged a personal war against the giant firm. The ‘‘great evil of the present system,’’ he wrote in 1883, ‘‘is the unrestricted and almost despotic power of the Western Union Telegraph Company.’’10 Hubbard became a leader in the ‘‘postalization’’ movement, a campaign to create a second telegraph system under the aegis of the U.S. Postal Service.

While having a monopoly is bad, I think that privatizing the industry is even worse because then it becomes an argument of free speech.
