Microsoft essentially had a monopoly on computers, while Microsoft did not make them, they made the software needed to use the computer. Since the majority of computers run Windows, Microsoft can install any software they want and the majority of its users will use it because they don't know about other options. This gives Microsoft the ability to control what you see and do on the internet.
